Something in defeat

by DS Maolalaí

around me
laundry drips
like leaves
in sinking weather. there is something
in defeat here – cold tile;
a place
for things to drape
and eventually
dry sticky. the air
is hot
with caught moisture,
soft wet
like sodden dogs. after they are hung
twisted as trapped animals
I open the machine
and pack in
my darker clothes.

DS Maolalaí has been nominated for Best of the Web and twice for the Pushcart Prize. His poetry has been released in two collections, Love is Breaking Plates in the Garden (Encircle Press, 2016) and Sad Havoc Among the Birds (Turas Press, 2019)
