DS Maolalai
like a piece
of used tinfoil
unrolled and laid flat,
from a sandwich
from your pocket.
the sea is calm
today, pressed out grey
in stretching texture,
the occasional detail
of boats moving slowly
and cutting white lines
as they pass.
we stand at the top
of the hill above dalkey,
sipping hot chocolate
and eating our sandwiches.
watching the water
and the fall
of the landscape
going rough in its tumble
to greyness
and surf.
DS Maolalai has been nominated nine times for Best of the Net and seven times for the Pushcart Prize. He has released two collections, Love is Breaking Plates in the Garden (Encircle Press, 2016) and Sad Havoc Among the Birds (Turas Press, 2019). His third collection, Noble Rot is scheduled for release in April 2022.
